Inclusion & Safety

SEND & Safeguarding

Every child deserves to feel safe, included and supported. Here you'll find our approach to SEND provision and our commitment to safeguarding across all three nurseries.

🤝 Our inclusion promise

Every child who walks through our doors is welcomed, valued and supported — regardless of ability, diagnosis or background. We believe that inclusion is not a resource to be allocated; it is the way we work. Our teams are trained to adapt environments, routines and activities so that every child can participate, thrive and belong.

🔄 Our SEND approach: Assess · Plan · Do · Review

We follow the graduated approach set out in the SEND Code of Practice (2015). This is a cycle of four stages, repeated as often as needed to make sure each child is making progress.

Assess

We gather observations, talk with parents and, where appropriate, seek input from specialists to build a clear picture of the child's strengths and areas of need.

Plan

Together with parents and, where involved, external agencies, we agree targeted outcomes and the strategies we will use to achieve them. This forms the child's SEND Support Plan.

Do

The plan is put into daily practice. This may include adapted activities, specialist equipment, targeted 1:1 time, visual supports, or referrals to external professionals such as Speech & Language Therapy or the Portage service.

Review

At agreed intervals (at least termly) we meet with parents to review progress against the outcomes, celebrate what is working, and update the plan. The cycle then begins again.

👩‍💼 Speak to our SENCo / Manager

If you have any concerns about your child's development, or would like to discuss SEND support, please speak to the nursery manager or SEND Co-ordinator (SENCo) at your site. You do not need a diagnosis to ask for support — early conversations make the biggest difference.

🛡️ Safeguarding statement

Just Little Kidz is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children in our care. We have a legal duty under the Children Act 1989, the Children Act 2004 and the statutory framework Working Together to Safeguard Children to ensure all reasonable steps are taken to protect children from harm.

Each nursery has a named Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) who holds responsibility for safeguarding practice and liaison with external agencies including the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) and children's social care. All staff receive safeguarding training at induction and at regular intervals thereafter.

Our safeguarding policy is reviewed annually and is available on request from the nursery manager.

🩺 Paediatric first aid

At Just Little Kidz, the safety, health and wellbeing of every child is our highest priority.

We ensure that staff working with children receive appropriate paediatric first-aid training, so they are prepared to respond calmly and effectively in the event of an accident, injury or medical emergency. This helps us provide a safe, caring and responsive environment across our nurseries.

Our team follows clear procedures for:

  • responding to accidents and injuries;
  • recording and reporting incidents to parents/carers;
  • administering basic first aid where required;
  • monitoring children after minor accidents;
  • contacting emergency services when necessary;
  • keeping first-aid equipment accessible and regularly checked;
  • supporting children with known medical needs in line with agreed care plans.

Parents/carers will always be informed of any accident or injury involving their child, and all incidents are recorded in line with our nursery procedures.

We are committed to maintaining a safe environment where children can learn, play and explore with confidence.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Does my child need a diagnosis to receive SEND support?+
No. We provide support based on need, not diagnosis. If you or a practitioner has concerns about your child's development, we will begin the assess-plan-do-review cycle immediately, without waiting for any formal assessment or label.
What external professionals do you work with?+
We work closely with Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Portage workers, health visitors, Educational Psychologists and local authority SEND advisers. We can support families in making referrals where appropriate.
Is there extra funding available for SEND?+
Depending on your child's level of need, your local authority may provide Inclusion Funding or Disability Access Fund (DAF) to support additional staffing or resources. We can advise and assist with applications — please speak to the nursery manager.
How do I make a safeguarding concern confidentially?+
You can speak directly to the nursery's DSL, contact the Local Authority MASH, or call the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000 — all of which are confidential. You can also make an anonymous referral to your local authority children's services if you prefer not to be identified.
What training do your staff have in safeguarding?+
All staff complete safeguarding training at induction, with refresher training every two years at minimum. Our DSLs complete enhanced safeguarding training. All staff are DBS-checked before beginning work with children, and we have robust safer recruitment procedures in place.
